Entertaining outdoors in Winter
Entertaining outdoors in Winter has it challenges. We are lucky in Australia to have some pretty great weather throughout the year. While in most parts the Summer can be scorching, this time of year is a great time to enjoy the outdoors. The sun is bearable! Winter does bring a chill to the air and can make outdoor entertaining a bit less enticing. The question is how to keep guests (and yourself) warm.
There are a couple of options we love – Fireplaces, Fire Pits and In-Built Heating.
The most attractive way to heat your outdoor area is by adding an outdoor fireplace. Outdoor fireplaces make fantastic additions to your home’s exterior living spaces and, in some cases, can even increase the value of your home.
The fireplace should be the focal point.
It is an excellent heat source that really takes the chill out of the air and with the right comfortable furniture arranged around it, makes it the perfect spot in Winter. While this is a more expensive option, it is also a more attractive one.
This is an affordable option for heating and creates the perfect place for family and friends to gather to spend time together, evoking a feeling of being in the outdoors around a camp fire. They can be portable and permanent.
We were invited to a friends place, who happened to be Greek, and they had designed and built a permanent fire pit that doubled as a spit as well. When the lamb was done the spit components were removed and the fire pit remained which everyone sat around.
Pits are available for as little as $59 at Bunnings with a huge range available on line from a variety of suppliers.
Permanent fire pits are a better option for homeowners concerned about the overall look of their landscape design and can be installed by a professional (like us!) or if you fancy yourself as a handy man, can be built by the homeowner.
Fire pits should always have some sort of fire break surrounding them, such as a paving stone or gravel, which also provides a level surface on which to place seating for your guests. We often build seating in stone around the fire pit so it is a destination point in the garden.
A simple outdoor heater can be purchased very easily. Or you can install strip heating. Get your electrician involved to design the best solution for your area. If you are feeling really indulgent and building an area look at underfloor heating.
Stay warm… and enjoy.
