Inner City Courtyard Garden

Brief for Inner City Courtyard

Secret Gardens completed this inner city courtyard garden a few years ago.  The client brief was to create a private garden on a corner block that was exposed to the street. The block was paved and faced west, ensuring the garden could not be enjoyed in Summer. With all inner city courtyards space was limited. Designs in small spaces require consideration of how the owners will use their outdoor areas. Our client wanted a low maintenance garden that was suitable for entertaining.

The Design

The architecture was simple and clean. This required a sympathetic design for the inner city courtyard.  Basalt tiles combined with granite cobbles provide an interesting detail and define the cooking area. Boundary walls were raised on the side and rear boundary to create privacy.

An Electrolux BBQ connected to the mains gas line sits on a simple concrete bench-top that was poured on site. The BBQ was placed perpendicular to the boundary wall rather than against it, creating a space when entertaining where friends can gather and chat to the cook!

A simple planting plan celebrated the changing seasons, allowing maximum light and warmth into the courtyard in winter. The Ornamental pears (Pyrus ‘Capital’) provide protection from the western sun without creating too much shade in the garden. They offer Autumn colour, are bare in Winter, allowing as much light into the garden as possible. In Summer they are lush and green therefore providing shade. The Robinias were underplanted with Bromeliads and Carissa.

An  automated awning installed to extend across the courtyard provides much needed shade. Dulux Monument on the rear walls allow the plants to ‘pop’ against the fence and helps the boundary wall recede.

Finally, the addition of white pots suit the neutral palette adding further interest to the space.

As a result of all these elements, the exposed corner block is now a private garden, perfect for entertaining.
